Default Es Kleine Eidelweiss

For many years, I was a member of the local German-American Society in Omaha and a participating member of Society's men's Singing Wanderers. This song, which is the opening of the film, was always one of my favorites and one that was particularly enjoyed by the WWII German veterans that populated the singing group! (Was fortunate to become well acquanted with a StuG IV driver who spent his entire army career on the Eastern Front and currently resides in Council Bluffs, Iowa.) Boy, does he have some great stories.

There are many recordings of "Es Kleine Eidelweiss", but this has to be the best. Grab a stein of Paulaner, bring up the words on Google, sip the suds, and place yourself in the Haufbrauhaus and enjoy!

And here is a brief history of the song (written in 1941) along with the words and translation.

One more version with several wartime photos of some very good-looking ladies who were probably waiting at home for their Soldaten to return.
